"I have a 1987 17' Galaxie

"I have a 1987 17' Galaxie. Recently I was on the lake while cruising @ 10mph I heard and felt two thuds, and left me with my motor running and the boat not going (no longer) into gear. While investegating I could hear a slight rattle comming from the top portion of the outdrive. I shut it down and now I seek advise. ??

I have a feeling some gears are gone or something bad (expensive) has happend. Can anyone recommend any pre investigation I can preform and or any general ideas before I burn a hole in my wallet?"

open the lower , and inspect clutch dog and gears."
 
First pull the lower drain plu

First pull the lower drain plug and see what comes out. Grey fluid with metal flakes is very bad.
