"i have a 66 larson with 4cyl

"i have a 66 larson with 4cyl mercruiser and stern drive in driveway on trailer. it cover heated on my brother at the river. can i drop the stern in a barrel of water to see if it will pickup water? before i let him take it i had a garden hose clamped on and it run fine on the trailer. need help troubleshooting, thanks jack"
