Tried to pull the gimbel they

Tried to pull the gimbel they dont make a gear puller small enough that comes from AutoZone Tractor Supply etc... So i ground a washer down and messed with it until i got it into place and pulled the nut through the washer ... Do i need to remove the gimbel ring ?? if so what is the size of the star bit to remove the bolts on each side>?

autozone has a three jaw slide

autozone has a three jaw slide hammer that should work (free loaner). It has worked for me.
A 1/2" hex (allen) socket works great and also available at autozone in a three pack (greatneck) that also includes 9/16 and 5/8 for around 8.00 bucks.
gimbles can be hard but usually with determined
and many many slides it should start backing out.

"I cooled the bearing with one

"I cooled the bearing with one of those aerosole computer cleaner spray cans, and quickley warmed the case with a heat gun. I was using a slide hammer to begin with, and it came right out. We also cooled the new bearing in the freezer b4 installing. Ps. I had the transom assy. rebuilt but it had a Chineese bearing installed by the rebuilder. Original merc. bearing is much smoother thant he chineese one. John.}}"
