Disconnected wires

I recently purchased boat with

I recently purchased boat with a volvo penta engine. When going thru the engine I noticed 2 wires that look as though they should be or once were connected to each other. I was wondering if anyone can give me some ideas on what these wires are.

One is red and comes out of the alternator. The other is purple and ends close to the alternator. It disappears into the wiring harness so I have not yet traced its origin.

Motor is a 4 cylinder and probably 1985 as is the boat
 
"I think you are referring to

"I think you are referring to the field excitation wire (purple) that is required for 3-wire alternators. If someone has installed a 1 wire alternator, the other two are not needed."
