"I have a 1974 Crestliner C995 with a Ford 302 (188hp) and a mercruiser 888 outdrive. I have been considering upgrading to a 351. Is this upgrade possible and/or worth it? What kind of horsepower will the 351 have? I currently have the stock 2bbl carb on the 302. If upgraded to a 351, would I need a new carb? Thank you for any information on making the change!"

"Ayuh,...

I think the 351s were rated at 235hp, with a 4bbl. Carb....
Adding a 4bbl. to Your motor should get you up over 200hp..."

"Thanks for the info on the 35

"Thanks for the info on the 351 HP. I've been hesitant to upgrade to 4 bbl carb on my 302. I was told an upgrade to a 4bbl carb on the 302 won't give any benefit and will just cause engine problems since the 302 Ford is designed to work at optimum with the 2 bbl. (The valves, cam, piston style, bore size, combustion chamber design and stroke are all set with the 2bbl) Since I was told this, I thought about just upgrading to the 351 vs. tuning the 302."

the 351 is wider and taller an

the 351 is wider and taller and will cause you a bunch of fitment problems. you might be better off with a dual plane intake manifold and a 600 cfm four barrel carburator. if you really wanted to up the power a good machine shop could install a stroker kit in your 302 to make it a 347 with the same block and all the original accesories. stroker kits start at about 700 and go up from there. kep in mind you are limited by the ability of your outdrive to withstand too much power.
