30L Mercruiser engine damage

I probably ran the engine hot

I probably ran the engine hot too long with a bad water pump. I now have a banging sound (1 bang per revolution) coming from the top of the engine. My first thoughts are either a rod or valve stem. I haven't pulled off the valve cover yet. Any suggestions?
 
Try some combustion chamber cl

Try some combustion chamber cleaner from merc. It may be just some carbon.

Probably Easier to put the motor on the enginestand 1st though...."

"The rods, lifters and rockers look good. I'm going to run a compression test before I yank the head. Hopefully I'll solve this before I have to resort to pulling the engine. I'd rather be out put putting around on Long Islands Sound..."
