"You could use a signal genera

"You could use a signal generator to determine if it works but without knowing what to set the pulse width at to correspond with RPM, all it will tell you is if it works, not accuracy. You could test a known to be accurate tach with the signal generator, make notes & then hook yours back up & retest at the same settings. Easier probably to find someone with the same set-up & hook it up & compare to their tach.
or use a hand held photo tach at crank and compare reading to yours.
