"What is causing my merc 5.7 to spin with spark plugs out but wont crank with spark plugs in. Starter was just rebuilt, have new wire from battery to starter and new ground wire from battery to ground. Battery is new, have tried 3 different batteries all bought this year. I'm pretty sure it is not hydrolock because no water came out of spark plug holes and oil level on my dipstick is exactly at full and that is where it was when I changed the oil before the season. Engine has carb. and is year 2000."

"To be clear, are you saying that the engine will not turn under starter power at all when plugs are in - just jams the starter completely with a loud thunk? Not hitting or showing any signs of trying to start?
Or are you saying that it does not fire when turned over with plugs in.
(not everyone uses the same meaning for the word 'crank' when describing trying to start an engine.)

But starter strongly turns engine when plugs removed?"
