"I have a 1976 fiberform w/mercuiser 888 with bad engine that I’m changing to a mercruiser 120 from a 1981? Stingray boat. Only want to change engines but see the bellhousing mounting ears are at different levels and mount spacing is different. Can i use the 1981 transom plate with the 1976 gimbal housing and/or do I,can I interchange the whole 1981 for 1976 unit....thx"

You want to swap out a 188 hp 5L V-8 for a 120 hp 4 banger?
What am I missing?
You will save some weight, but you won't be
happy.

Another issue is the drive ratio.
The 888 uses a 1.5 and the 120 needs a 1.98 or 2.0 ratio drive.

because the stingray was free

because the stingray was free with the right ratio drive for the motor. only using the boat in a 5mph canal

I think you would be better off to remove the entire old drive transom assembly and use all the stuff from the Stingray.
As far as I know the transom mounting holes are all the same. Anyone know for sure about this?
