Mercruiser 228 Removing Shift linkage from lower unit housing

I have 79 Mercruiser 228. I already have the lower unit off and now i am trying to remove the lower unit housing... I have removed the hinge pins... Now i have to remove the shift linkage and it takes a 9/16 open end wrench.. Once you get in there there is no way to turn it.. No room.. ideas?? thanks

you must disconnect shift cable end 2 square jam bolts on engine side remove plastic piece loosen 7/16 brass jam nut unsrew s/s cable guide. remove metal clamp an shift cable bellows now you can pull bell and cable out if you are trying to replace cable cut cable and order new style that loads from back a special tool is required but you can weld two deep well 9/16 sockets together to slide over cable and get to nut . you will have to remove or cut cable to get out of bell housing you will also need to disconnect water hose and bellows i get paid well to do that job it takes a pro with all the right tools 3 hrs to replace all rubber cable and bearing
