"Friend has a 95 24 ft bayliner cierra with the 5.7 litre chev motor. He is missing some teeth on the ring gear and has been told that to change the ring gear he must remove the out drive
and pull the motor to replace it. Have looked and it seems that if one was to pull the outdrive, it might be possible to replace it without removing the engine. Is it possible?
He has been quoted $2500 to have it done wnich to me seems rather costly !"

"I'm afraid your friend needs to pull the outdrive, then the engine with the bellhousing.

In my opinion, if he is mechanically inclined, it would be cheaper if he buys a copy of the Seloc repair manual and does the job himself (it does not involve rocket science). He may just need to take the boat to a shop where they can pull the engine (after all wiring, hoses, etc are disconnected), then he can replace the ring gear, then reinstall everything again and put the engine back in the same shop.

Of course, if he is not up to the challenge or if he lacks mechanical ability, it seems that $2500 will fix his problem."
