Purchased boat with 5.0 ltr en

Purchased boat with 5.0 ltr engine. Discovered a 2" to 3" play in the steering. Can this be adjusted out?

"If your steering works with helm and cable, I don't think you can adjust it; the play is probably due to wear. I went to hydraulic steering to prevent that problem.

Another possibility is that the splines in the steering yoke (part 2) are worn, or that the tiller arm bolt (part 47) is loose, or that the linkage on top of the tiller arm (46) is loose or worn)..
