"I have a 1997 Yamaha 40 hp outboard. Shifts into gear ok and runs fine at low speed. At about 1800 RPM, the boat loses forward speed and the RPMs begin to increase on their own - as if the prop as stopped turning.

Is this a cable adjustment or is there a gear problem somewhere? Any advice on what I could try?

have a 1985 yamaha 80 whuch has nexer given probs until recently. there is no accelaration once in gear after approx 2000 rpm. no prob in neutral. replaced impellar, renewed fuel lines and throttle cables, slight improvement. am an engine novice so any advice would be gratefully received.
