How often should you inspect the manifolds they are fresh water cooled?"

"George,

The Crusader XL Service Manual says:

Torque Specs:
  • exhaust elbow: 25 lb-ft
  • exhaust riser: 25 lb-ft
  • exhaust manifold and head: 35 lb-ft
I don't know about the other questions, maybe someone else can help out.

"George,

When you say "head" bolts, I'm assuming you mean the manifold to head bolts. If so, yes, the last couple of years of production, prior to the discontinuation of the 454 engine, Crusader used 12 point bolts in this area. Earlier models used 6 point bolts which were very difficult to remove once the manifold developed some rust.

Regarding the inspection of the manifolds, you will see problems on the outside of these manifolds, long before the inside starts to go. I would remove and inspect the risers every season or two depending on your usage and the type of water you boat in. When the risers are off be sure to inspect the mating surface of the manifold where the blockoff plate goes. This is a potential problem area. Be sure there is not a lot of pitting or corrosion which could cause a gasket leak.

Good luck
Rick"
