"Hi guys,

I am new to the merc forum. I have been watching a 1985 18' Forester boat on a local online auction. It is only up to $475. It has a 170 hp mercruiser. What engine would be in this and would it be any good. I am going to look at it but wanted a little info before I do. I like to work on stuff but if this setup is junk I don't want to waste my time. Thanks."

"Why do you think it's being auctioned? It's Merc's attempt to make a powerhouse out of a matchbox which they did. It has an iron head and aluminum block. Not been made in years. When working it is a great engine. When not it can be the motor from hell. That boat is 23 years old; better sea trial it and pay an expert to inspect it for transom, stringer and floor rot and the engine compression should be checked. Some will say buy it whille I say RUN since there are many boats on the market."
