"Could be..... the free end of the hose is slightly spread indicating it has been on some sort of nipple, also at the top end the small white part between the hose and bottle http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii275/XA351COUPE/OUTBOARD003.jpg"
is a non-return valve, it has a spring and ball bearing inside. Obviously this is to stop oil getting out, but what i was thinking was, when the oil is been pumped up from the inboard main oil tank to the engine oil tank, to prevent the tank on the engine over-presurising a vacume is activated through the hose (by the oil transfer pump starting) to open the non-return valve, and shutting down when the float level shuts down the oil pump. I should point out that the oil pump is on the tank in the boat and is activated by the electronic float level in the tank on the engine. It is all Genuine Yamaha gear."

"FOUND IT!!!!!

Its as you

"FOUND IT!!!!!

Its as you said (sort of) JUST-IN-TIME, its the Breather line and it goes to the air box, thats where it gets its vacume from.........

Well would love to stay and chat but there is a fish out there with my name on it, and i have kept it waiting long enough......lol"
