The model number will tell you the year.

The model for your motor should be something like:

  • BF = Honda
  • 8 = 7.5HP
  • X = 1999 (or others see below)
  • L = Long Shaft (or others see below)
  • A = American or D for European
  • S = Electric start or blank for rope start

Other years as follows:
  • Blank = 1978
  • Z 1979
  • A 1980
  • B 1981
  • C 1982
  • D 1983
  • E 1984
  • F 1985
  • H 1987
  • K 1989
  • M 1990
  • W 1998
  • X 1999
  • Y 2000

"I have a Honda 5 HP VF-50 motor, it fell and I broke the handlebar. It is discontinued from Honda, does anyone know where I could possibly get an aftermarket one?
