"I have a 96' 350 Alpha Thunderbolt IV ignition system.
The other day, I had to jump start the engine due to a dead battery.
After doing so, the engine would not start and did not have any spark.
After investigation, I found that the ignition module was bad.

Question is,
Since these are around $400 each.
is there anyway to do a conversion to a normal Car/truck ignition system. To bypass this cost.
Seems like I could just get a Solidstate Distr. and go that route.
Or does anyone know where I could find one at a good price. Used is fine.

thanks"

"Lord, have mercy...
Before we start talking about putting car engines in boats again, can you tell us what troubleshooting you've done so far that made you conclude that the module is bad?
Is the emergency kill switch in the 'run' position?
Did you check the fuses and circuit breaker?"

"Could just be the module inside the dist.
And YES ,you can use car parts in a boat BUT you become a CANDIDATE for the "DARWIN AWARDS"
They are awarded
"Postumously""

I saw a new TB IV module on eB

I saw a new TB IV module on eBay for about $250 BUY IT NOW price the other day. Also saw used for $150.

"I went through all of the troubleshooting steps in the merc manual. Tested for voltage all the way up to the coil.
Also tested the coil and got the proper resistance values there.
I know the module is bad, since it went bad a few weeks back when I jumped it off using a battery charger.
Inside the module, there are what appears to be fusable wiring from the connector to the circuit board. I opened mine up and one of the wires was gone.
I fixed this by soldering a small peice of wire from the connector to the board.
When I installed it, it worked fine.
then a week passed and I had to jump it off again and I got no fire that time.
So, I'm pretty sure that when I jump the motor, it killed my ignition module.
leason learned on that one.. do not use the quick jump settings, too much voltage/current for the system.

And as for the ignition system, from a car/truck. what would/could happen for the darwin awards?
I mean, this just gives it the spark and timing.

Its not like I'm putting a Car starter on it.."

"So, why are you even asking?

"So, why are you even asking?

Sounds like you made up your mind long before you posted your orignal question.

Also, I've used the starting booster on my battery charger several times to jump start my boat... never had a problem on my 5.7L merc with Thunderbolt IV ignition... you might have something else going on there."
