"Hi guys, I have been an avid reader on this forum for some time now but today I decided to join. I have had an ongoing problem with my boat last year and I am going to attempt to fix it this year. I have a 1983 merc. 485 with an enclosed cooling system. Anyway the problem I am having is the boat will start and run great when cold, then after I shut it off for about an hour and go to restart it it takes a very long time to start and it smokes for about 10 seconds then it's fine. The smoke is anti freeze and my level goes down but very slow. I was going to take the head off and have a look at it but I figured someone might have had this before. Three years ago I rebuilt the engine. I put new crank and conecting rod bearings,piston rings and all new gaskets. The only thing I noticed was a small crack internal to the exhaust manifold. I could not find a manifold at the time so I just reinstalled it. It wasn't burning the coolent it burns now. It has gotten worse every year. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Scott"

I should have invested in 470 manifolds when they were available..boy could I make money from it! They are available. See below.

"Yes,that is correct.Manifold should be the culprit.You stated it leaked for 3 years, but not like it is now.My guess is you have a slight crack that is not opening until you it starts to get hot.At that point you are burning it but so slow you do not see it so much.After shutdown it leaks to the exhaust and sits there waiting for the 1 hour later start to make smoke.....Todd"
