"New to the Forum, new to the boating world. I just recently "aquired" an older boat with a '64 Johnson 75 hp motor. The boat has been sitting in a quansit for 17 yrs. Friends and I thought we needed a summer project. My question is, Are we crazy, or is this something worth putting time and money into? The boat was well taken care of before being put into storage. We can handle everything that's not part of the engine."

"I have that same motor and it is a fine runner. If yours has not been abused and turns over freely I'd clean the carburetor, replace water pump, rebuild fuel pump and tune it up(points, condensor, etc.) After that it should start ok. Also drain and refill the lower unit. Mine is electric shift and uses Premium Blend Type C oil and not regular GL-5 lower unit oil.

After I plane the boat out I reduce the throttle to 3/4 to conserve fuel. These old V4s can really drink the gas!!
