I just aquired this tritoon wi

I just aquired this tritoon with this engine. It has the altenator that is built into what I would call the harmonic balancer of a car engine. The altenator is in pretty bad shape. Has anyone ever installed an external alternator on an engine like this?

Also has anyone ever bypassed the heat exchanger cooling system on this engine and installed the standard stern drive cooling system to this engine?
 
You need a fresh water cooling

You need a fresh water cooling system because of the aluminum components. Aftermarket kits are available to mount an alt. off the front pulley is you have room in front of the engine for the alt. to fit.

I have a 1980 470 mercruiser also. I put the conversion kit for the alt. on. Got it from ebasicpower.com. Very easy job. Make sure the aluminum bracket bolts flush to your block if you get it. Mine broke twice. Hade to grind alittle off the bracket."
