Noisy Gear Engage v8 Mercruiser

I have a searay with a v8 merc

I have a searay with a v8 mercruiser alpha one and its has started to dvelop a crunch sound around the prop area when engaging in either forward or neutral gear is this normal?
Noise is not heard during throttle of the engine just the initial engagement of gear.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Also trying to find out what idle speed the boat should be running at currently 1000 which is high I think?"

In the Water, with a load on the prop.....

Alphas Always Crunch when shifted into gear....
Just remember to Shift Briskly......."
