I bought a Cheseapeake Workboa

I bought a Cheseapeake Workboat with a Detroit 453. I opened to coolant or water reservoir prior to starting and noticed a sludge mud like substance that was about an inch thick. It starts and runs fine. I know nothing about diesel motors and what this means. Any help would be great.

"NEED TO HAVE ENGINE INSPECTED, SOUNDS LIKE OIL, MIT BE FROM ENG OIL COOLER OR MARINE GEAR COOLER ,LEAKING OIL IN TO COOLING SYSTEM."
