Now that I've decided to go GM, I'm on to a new topic here.

My research so far leads me to believe the following will work:

-- Engine (to buy):
Used Alpha Gen II (1996 - serial# 6.2 million) 5.7 Mercruiser OMC drop-in engine, complete, with flywheel cover (Alpha-compatable 9" footprint rear engine mount).

-- Exhaust (to buy):
4" Y pipes

-- Transom Plate, Gimbal Housing, bell housing (on hand):
Alpha Gen I (1989 or 1990)

-- Drive unit - upper and lower ('on hand' or 'to buy'):
Existing pre-Alpha, or SEI aftermarket replacement for Alpha Gen I

I've not found a clear answer on one topic (I hope its only one…):
One guy said I'd need to get a different engine coupler to make a Gen I drive work with a Gen II engine (drive shaft splines the same, length different?). But descriptions of couplers I've seen for sale show various couplers fitting various engines, with no mention of what drives they might be for - no mention of different applications between pre-Alpha, Alpha Gen I and Alpha Gen II drives. This seems to indicate there is no difference in couplers for what drive shaft they will work with. I'm wondering about this…

Any advice, warnings, comments, rude or smart remarks welcome and appreciated!"
