"i am considering purchasing a used boat with a 19 year old mercruiser 4.3L 190 hp motor. the owner claims he took very good care of it and that it runs extremely well. he does not know how many hours are on the engine, but he used it consistently over the years. probably 500 to 1,000 hours - most likely closer to 1,000 hours, is my guess. my concern: if i do purchase this boat and i need to eventually have the engine overhauled, how much could that cost?"

You better check the floor, transom, stringers and engine mounts for ROT==RUN if you find it unless the boat is basically given to you and you can do the work."
