"On a GM 454 how much should the starter bendix gear engage into the ring gear, full width of ring gear?"

"Thanks, that is what I though

"Thanks, that is what I thought. Problem I see when the starter is bolted in place is that the starter gear only engages about 2/3 the width of the ring gear.

Any suggestions how to adjust the starter to get full engagement? Slot the holes? Maybe the starter I have is not the correct one?"

"Nope,.... No adjustments,&#43

"Nope,.... No adjustments,+ there's only 2 different Chevy starters, if it fits At All,...
You've got the right 1.....

With 2/3rds engagement,.... I Run It...."

"Actually the ring gear is seated all the way to the step on the flywheel. I thought about trying to tap it back slightly to get more engagement but then the ring gear wouldn't be in complete contact with the flywheel. I also thought about getting the face of the flywheel at the crankshaft machined down, but that does not seem like a practical solution.

I think I'll do as you suggest, just run it.

Thanks for your help!"
