Would it be possible for some water to penetrate, through the vent or drain hole, if the gaskets are missing from the plugs??"

"Plugs must have gasgets.
Sometimes, what leaks in (water) can leak out. The cheap and easy test is to keep a eye out for oil leaking from vent,fill plugs, from prop hub/exhaust. Other than that, a pressure test is the other way to get to the problem."
