Short shaft motor long shaft transom

My buddy just acquired a very

My buddy just acquired a very nice aluminum jon boat. The problem is that this boat requires a long shaft motor. His 40hp motor which is almost new is a short shaft model. Does he have any options for making this combination work together? I see that Cabelas sells a slidemaster jack-plate that will afford up to 6" of vertical travel would something of this nature work? Does anybody have any ideas or experience on this issue?
 
The difference between a short

The difference between a short shaft and long shaft engine is exactly 5 inches. Your buddy's problem creates the choice of cutting the transom down (not a good idea on a alumium boat) or incorporating that jack plate.
