"Does anyone know the real difference between the Johnson/Evinrude commercial and non-commercial outboards? I have read that they have lower compression and can use lower octane gas. But what is the difference in performance, gas consumption, reliability, and durability, etc...?"

"One thing is that the powerheads in general are lower rated than the 'leisure' ones, but another factor is the gear cases used. In quite some cases the commercial engines are using 'one size up' in gear case. 45/55 using 60/70 gear case, V4 are using V6 gear case etc. This allows for bigger blade area, better efficiency/push/economy at 'lower' speed. But there might be other issues coming into play as trim/no-trim, charge capacity,VRO/non-VRO etc."
