"I recently bought a boat with a 2002 BF 9.9, remote, electric start. It does not currently have anything charging the batteries while running. Is it possible that this motor does have a charging system that is not hooked up? Is it possible to add a charging system to what is already there? Any help would be great. The motor is older, but has very few hours, and I would like to keep it, but I'm finding the need to have some charging of the batteries. Thanks in advance for the help."

"Looking at the parts diagrams for this model, if it was a remote/electric start from the factory it should have a regulator/rectifier that would charge the battery.

With the motor running you should be able to get a reading of about 13.5 volts at the battery terminals if the sytem is working properly. With the motor "not running" your reading should be closer to 12 volts.

Always keep the battery connected. If this motor was ever run without the battery connected it could have fried the rectifier..."
