"My wife and I are considering

"My wife and I are considering buying a 1966 Hatteras 50' we beleive we should look at rebuilding the engines before relying on them, they currently have 3900 hrs on two 8v71N Detroit 300 hp engines. Any advise, or thoughs as to average cost for a authorize detroit dealer would charge versus doing it myself??. Yes I have done a large do it your self rebuild in the past not resently.
Any input would be apperciated.

The rule of thumb is a $1000.0

The rule of thumb is a $1000.00 dollars a cylinder if someone does it for you.

"We just bought a 1965 Hattera

"We just bought a 1965 Hatteras 50' with exact 3900 hours on the twin 8V71N's. They work just fine, our survey states not even half time for them.
However, if you experience starting problems it's probably the battery/parallel switch. The starboard batteries have very poor access since hidden behind the genset and should be looked at. For longer life consider block heaters.
If you do the rebuilding I was told that Cat Head Bolts should be used.
Cheers."
