50 mercruiser starting woes

"my 1999 5.0 mercruiser (Trophy Bayliner 2352 WA) does not always engage when I turn the key. I replaced the ignition switch , however, the same thing occurs. Seems like if I try to start the boat after its been idle for a week or two I get no reaction from the ignition. If I play with turning the key a couple of times, the engine starts right up. And after that it seems to start up almost every time. I suspect the starter solenoid may be corroded. Is the solenoid connected to the starter? I have no idea how I'm going to reach down there. Thanks for any ideas."

"I don't blame you--Baylin

"I don't blame you--Bayliner didn't care about maintaining the engine after the boat left the factory.

Yes, the solenoid is part of the starter circuit, and it COULD be the problem. So could bad connections on the battery and starter. I'd start there.
