"I have inherited two Perkins Range 4 200's in a 44ft trawler. While cruising one engine shutdown with a large plume of white smoke out the enhaust. Later inspection showed the crankcase oil level higher than the last evening's inspection, with thinner fluid smelling of diesel. What could this be?"

Looks like a broken injector tip. It will be misfiring ( white smoke) and dribbling fuel into the sump via the cylinder. Pull the injectors - you'll see the culprit right away. Let's hope the missing bit didn't damage the piston too much.
