" My water pump failed on my 1985 3.5hp Mercury while running at half throttle. The motor started to sputter and then died. The motor was hard to pull, so I just left it alone until I got home. At home it pulled easily and started right up, but I shut it right down again. I'm wondering if this over heating seriously damaged my motor (bearings, piston, cylinder wall) beyond just replacing the water pump? "

If the engine has full power it is probably okay. If the rings or bearings were damaged you would notice a difference in the way the engine runs.

" If you still have good compression and it runs well, the rings and cylinders probably were not damaged. Bearings would not have been affected. "
