I recently bought a used 10 hp

I recently bought a used 10 hp outboard. The Model is B100LA and the serial no. is 1003253.
Can anybody tell me the year of the motor? The motor runs well untill I put the cowl on then it dies.I understand this is due to a hole in the exhaust pipe. I was able to varify a hole in the pipe. The big question is how do I get to the pipe.Do I need to remove the engine or can I get to the pipe from the lower unit? As a non mechanic can this be accomplished without to many problems.I would appreciate any info I receive. Thanks
 
"Repair procedure: remove carb

"Repair procedure: remove carb, manifold, then cylinder head. Replace pipe and assemble in reverse order. Of coarse using new packings ect. If this is a salt water engine, there may be a host of problems. Hopefully the lower pipe rubber is ok, if not, replacing it requires removing gearcase and midsection. torque values are important!"
