Could be any or all of above mentioned problems! Emilate by starting with compression test.

" A compression test is a good idea, we used to hook a gauge to the blow-by tube for a quick field test, not perfect, but easier to do in the field. I don't know the specs on what the pressure should be, but I know the original info came from a Detroit book (long, long ago in a galaxy far far away). Make sure the slobber boxes aren't plugged. "

"Pete I had the same problem on one of my engines in my 40' ocean. After review from my diesel mechanic the verdict was a bad piston ring on the 5th cylinder, all that you can do is rip it apart. ;)

Boat mechanic says my airboxes

Boat mechanic says my airboxes on my 1987 671 ti are loose. Friends think its nonsense. ANy opinions?
