"This engine takes quite a long time to warm up, it will run ok at low speed and rpm's but it will choke and died when moving the throttle further if not allowed to warm up for 10-15 min.
Is this normal? After that period it runs ok."

This is not normal. Maybe someone removed the thermostat or the thermostat is stuck in the open position.
